The Spreadsheet Says Yes. Your Gut is Screaming No

You're in a team meeting. The spreadsheet says yes. Your gut is screaming no.

What do you do?

If you're like most leaders, you override it. You tell yourself to be logical. You make the "rational" choice.

Six months later, you're thinking: "I knew. Why didn't I listen?"

Most people don't realize that they are making most of their decisions from survival centers of their brain. Nor do they realize how much this costs them.

Think about a typical morning.

Alarm. Cortisol spike. Traffic. 47 Slack messages. Hard conversation before you've taken a full breath.

By 10am, your nervous system thinks you're being chased.

And when you're in fight-or-flight, you literally cannot access the higher centers of your brain. Blood flow shifts away from your prefrontal cortex — where strategy and judgment live — and floods into your survival centers.

You're making million-dollar decisions from the part of your brain designed to keep you alive. Not to lead well.

The research is fascinating:

Your gut has 500 million neurons. Your heart has 40,000. Your body processes information independently of your conscious awareness — and sends you signals constantly.

When you get a gut feeling? That's not woo woo. That's pattern recognition running on decades of lived data, faster than your conscious mind can keep up.

You have a lifetime of embodied wisdom-- your body is always trying to speak to you-- but we've been taught not to listen. To override our wisdom in favor of survival thinking.

What chronic stress actually does to your decisions:

You default to safe, not right. You get tunnel vision. You make fear-based choices and call them strategic ones. You miss what the subtle cues in the room (and within) are trying to tell you (you're missing the gold nuggets!).

You fall apart in high-stakes negotiations. You run on adrenaline instead of embodied presence.

The good news: you can shift your state in minutes.

Research from the HeartMath Institute shows you can move out of fight-or-flight into coherence — where your heart, brain, and nervous system sync — fast.

How? Change your physiology first. Not your thoughts. Your body.

Slow your exhale. Hand on your heart. Feel your feet on the ground.

I know how that sounds. But there's research on people with prefrontal cortex damage who kept their full logical reasoning — and became completely incapable of making real-world decisions. Because they lost access to bodily information.

Logic without embodied wisdom doesn't work. Just look at the state of the world if you need more proof.

In a world where everyone has access to the same data and AI tools--

Your embodied wisdom is the one thing that can't be replicated.

So the next time your gut says something different than your spreadsheet —

Maybe your body knows something your brain hasn't figured out yet.
